The Howling Void are a 1 man band from Texas that plays a symphonic form of funeral doom metal and this is a review of their 2013 ep "Runa" which was re-issued by Avantgarde Music and also contains a bonus track.
A very dark, melodic, heavy and symphonic funeral doom metal sound starts off the ep along with only a small amount of clean singing vocals a few seconds later and clean guitars in the background which also mix in with both the symphonic and heavy parts and the first track is mostly instrumental.
All 3 of the tracks are very long and epic in length and on the second track vocals start getting utilized more often along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them and at times you can also hear a small amount of post metal elements being used for a few seconds along with a touch of dark ambient.
The Howling Void plays a style of funeral doom metal that is very dark, heavy, melodic, symphonic and heavy and on this recording also avoid the death metal growls that most band s or this genre utilize, the production sounds very dark and heavy while the lyrics cover Norse mythology and Paganism themes.
In my opinion The Howling Void are a very great sounding symphonic funeral doom metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Irmonsul". 8 out of 10.
