Sea Of Bones are a band from Connecticut that plays a mixture of atmospheric funeral doom metal, sludge, drone and post metal and this is a review of their self released 2013 album "The Earth Wants Us Dead".
"The Stone, The Slave And The Architect" begins with some drone sounds before the heavy doom metal/sludge riffs start kicking in and then the bass, drums, melodic funeral doom elements start kicking in along with some aggressive vocals and growls as well as some high pitched sludge screams and as time goes on by the music starts getting a lot more heavier and the song closes with some clean guitars.
"Black Arm" begins with some distorted drone elements and a few seconds alter heavy guitar riffs and drums come into the song along with some powerful b ass guitars when then lead up to some aggressive screams, shouts and growls and after awhile the music starts adding in some mid paced sections along with the song getting a lot more heavier in sound and towards the end atmospheric elements make their way into the song.
"Failure Of Light" begins with some soft acoustic guitars and after a couple of minutes heavy and melodic guitar riffs along with some drums make their way into the song and after a minute deep doom/death metal growls make their presence known in this song and as the song moves on high pitched black metal/sludge screams start coming in along with hardcore style shouts which also lead up to some dark sounding melodies and the song combines all styles of doom metal together.
"Beneath the Earth" begins with atmospheric drone sounds and a few seconds alter acoustic guitars start coming in and you can hear some synths in the background and halfway through the song heavy guitar and bass riffs start coming in along with some drums and melodic riffing and a minute later sludge style screams start coming in which in return leads up to some deep growls.
"The Bridge" begins with some ambient drone style synths and a few seconds alter drums are added into the song which also leads up to some soft clean guitar playing and a couple of minutes heavy and melodic guitar and bass riffs along with some drums start kicking in and halfway through the songs melodic chanting and aggressive sounding screams start making their presence known and towards the end melodic post rock guitar leads start coming in.
"The Earth Wants Us Dead" begins with some atmospheric drone synth sounds and after 10 minutes you can hear some drum beats coming into the song which also leads to the music getting a lot more diverse in sound along with some post rock guitar sounds and the song is all instrumental improv with no vocals being present and the song closes with some spoken word parts.
Song lyrics cover dark and depressive themes, while the production has a very strong, powerful, heavy, dark and professional sound for being a self released recording, where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the recording along with all of the songs being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion Sea Of Bones are a very great sounding hybrid of atmospheric funeral doom/sludge/drone and post metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Stone, The Slave And The Architect" and "The Bridge". RECOMMENDED BUY.
